Meeting Place Organic FarmHuron County, Ontario
Spring of 2003 has been cool and wet. We were able to get early plantings of ( left to right) (fall planted garlic), carrots, spinach and closely spaced double rows of peas in on time at the beginning of May, but hard rains have compacted the surface and created a clay crust. Here we are finally cultivating the peas with a walk behind single row cultivator. Our oldest mare Susie is doing the honours. The cultivator is adjustable for width which is useful if the row spacing varies. The carpet strips in the left foreground are used for covering carrot rows to maintain moisture until germination as they can take up to 3 weeks to germinate. In a dry spring they save the crop, but this year it turned out to be unnecessary.
