July
Red sphere hung in a tree. This is very attractive to the apple maggot (railroad worm). They tend to attack softer early apples, and generally come out here in early July. The red sphere is coated with Tanglefoot (I think it's the stickiest substance known to man) and it will trap the female fly as she tries to lay her eggs in a nice red apple. I wrap the apples in tightly-attached plastic wrap, because cleaning the Tanglefoot off the wooden apples at the end of the season is arduous. These wooden spheres are hung throughout the orchard - I have about 50 of them. |
