In 2008, I finished a Master of Environmental Studies degree at Dalhousie
University. I did a comparative case study of three farmers’ markets
in Nova Scotia, studying the social relations in these markets and how
quality and local food was understood from the perspective of consumers
and producers. This project provided me with a valuable introduction
to agriculture in Nova Scotia, as I had the opportunity to travel to
markets and producers’ farms throughout the summer of 2007.
While completing my MES degree, I also worked as a Research Assistant
on a food security project at Mount Saint Vincent University, lead by
Dr. Patty Williams. Working on this project allowed me to meet some
of the key people in the province working on local food systems, and
taught me more about the social and economic components of food systems.
Shortly before finishing my degree, I had the chance to work at the
OACC. I seized the opportunity to work further in the area of agriculture
and food studies. My position as Research Symposia Coordinator has allowed
me to become more intimately involved with the organic agriculture community
in Nova Scotia and across Canada and become more familiar with important
issues and research in this sector.
Before moving to Nova Scotia from Ontario to complete my MES degree,
I completed a Bachelor of Environmental Studies degree at York University.
Currently, in addition to my work at the OACC, I am working on a new
project with Farmers’ Markets Nova Scotia Cooperative, and can
be found playing classical piano in my spare time.
